About Vaughn

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

I believe the greatest gift anyone can receive is love.  I also believe the most important factor in any relationship, no matter the outcome, is your contribution to it.  Being born and raised in Harlem I grew up in a culture that radiated with love.  At the same time, I grew up in a sub-culture that downplayed loving relationships by socializing young men to establish autonomy from their parents, value quantity over quality with romantic relationships and have friendships rooted in competition.  Today, I see manifestations of this upbringing in men who are challenged with seeing their worth beyond masculinity, self-loathe in hyper-independence, struggle with maintaining relationships and much more.

I help Black men overcome barriers between themselves and loving to their fullest capacity so they can create their most fulfilling relationships.  I know what it is like to be down and feel void of love when you need it most: loneliness, feeling misunderstood, not wanting to spend time with your loved ones to avoid conflict but craving deeper relationships with them.  I also know the privileges of being enriched by loving relationships, the support, understanding, sense of belongingness, responses to conflict in loving ways and the plethora of benefits love has to offer.  By working together, I have the utmost confidence you will be reassured you did everything you could for you and your relationships to thrive.  By establishing fulfilling relationships not only will you create environments that foster love for others, you will also pave roads enabling you to be loved the way you want and deserve to be loved.

The opportunity to provide Black men with a space to be their most authentic self is an opportunity I hold with the highest regard.  For over a decade, I have intertwined knowledge of Psychology, Black Studies and Mental Health Counseling to provide each and every client with, authenticity, expertise, and professionalism.

About Therapy

As a therapist it is my responsibility to help clients better understand themselves and how they exist in the world.  I facilitate a process of exploration that deepens your understanding of self and how you came to exist in your relationships the way you do.  Conjoining your experience with psychological-education, we will develop skills to help you establish the fulfilling relationships you desire.  We will work to implement change reflective of your newly developed skills, to the point you have reassuring confidence you will maintain those changes.  You will be supported every step of the way.

Topics we will focus on may include, but are not limited to:

· Attachment

· Authenticity

· Communication

· Concepts of self

· Emotional intelligence

· Vulnerability

You may have the endurance to disregard your truest emotions and remain in relationships as you are, but you deserve so much more.  Ask yourself:  Are some of the people closest to you still extremely distant because it feels safe?  Have you grown callous by the disappointment from seeking help and receiving inadequate support?  Perhaps you have fully embraced the role society promotes of a hyper-masculine person who does not seek support?  Are you afraid to revisit wounds that make you feel fragile or you just do not want to feel like a burden?

I will help you show up in your relationships as your most authentic self, be comfortable in articulating how you want to relate with others and ultimately, build a loving network of support around you that you reciprocally feel safe with and supported by.  I look forward to collaborating with you as we navigate thoughts, feelings and behaviors enabling you to love to your fullest capacity and establish your most fulfilling relationships.
